Mutants are a known minority which faces the dual difficulty of being born into other ethnicities, causing them to struggle when creating a cultural identity of their own, and the fact that they often have powers that their parents and more mundane schools may be unable to help them learn to use. Fortunately for them, the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters exists to help both problems.
Uncanny X-Men follows the exploits of one group of Xavier graduates, the X-Men, in their freshman year at Empire State University.
