The outlaw team known as the Renegades is one born of circumstance and necessity. Each member of the team has suffered loss and in two cases betrayal, and are working to assist each other with their goals. They are the most informal team of superhuman adventurers, lacking an official charter, by-laws, membership dues, or even rules on who is or is not a member. They all like each other, but trust is a commodity the bulk of the team is understandable short of.
Luke Cage is a man who was framed by a man he considered a brother. Jessica Jones, going by the name Jewel, is an 18 year old girl who was was too close to a volatile mix of chemicals in her high school chemistry lab when it exploded; she has only recently woken up from a coma to realize the world has moved on without her. Clint Barton, the ex-carnival performer known as Hawkeye, was framed by his own brother for theft and murder. Bobbi Morse is an ex-criminal profiler who turned to private investigations and goes by the alias Mockingbird after leaving her position in SHIELD after Director Gyrich unveiled his Sentinels program to the public. And the Canadian mutant Logan, often called the Wolverine, suffers from amnesia as a result of various experiments.
The Renegades initially formed when Clint's brother, Barney, led Clint into an ambush by the criminal mercenaries called the Wrecking Crew in New York City's Central Park. This battle drew in the others one at a time. At the end of the battle, the five decided to stick together to assist each other. They have since moved into a four-story brownstone apartment building in Harlem to use as their base of operations. It was Jewel who first named their group; the others don't use the name that often, but others – notably the Daily Bugle and Homeland Security's Freedom Force team – are known to refer to them by it.
